Benefits of Torch-On Waterproofing

Torch On Waterproofing 1What exactly is torch-on waterproofing, and how can it help your roof stay protected against water and damp?

This innovation offers an alternative to asphalt roofing. Typically used on flat roofs, waterproofing membrane systems are made of sticky, viscous organic liquids. Bitumen, a hydrocarbon made from crude oil, is one of the key components of this material. Non-harmful to the environment, highly effective against water and boasting a number of unique qualities, bituminous torch-on is widely considered to be one of the most reliable tools for waterproofing contractors.

What is Torch-On Waterproofing?

Before we go into some of the benefit offered by this technology, let’s take a quick look at what torch-on water proofing is all about.

Simply put, bitumen torch-on is a specialised solution that works particularly well on flat concrete roofs. It also works well on foundation and retaining walls, flashings, parapet walls, expansion joints, corrugated and IBR roof laps and roofing screws, as well as gutters, flower boxes and water retaining structures. As a damp proofing measure, it helps to prevent the risk of water logging with the help of its water resistant surface.

Made from a mixture of bitumen and polymers, which are applied to a polyester or fibre-glass reinforcement membrane, a stronger, sturdier membrane is created to protect surfaces against damp and water. This membrane is powerful; resistant to tears as well as punctures. The final result is bitumen torch-on sheeting, which can be applied onto flat roof surfaces and then measured for an exact fit.

Torch-On Waterproofing Advantages

Some of the benefits offered by torch-on bitumen waterproofing include the following:

  • Suitable for full water immersion as well as sub-soil applications, it an ideal application for sealing box gutters and flower boxes.
  • Able to protect buildings while retaining harmony with the building’s environmental surroundings thanks to a range of mineral finishes offered.
  • Green roofing solution that offers a simple way to reduce carbon footprints.
  • Extremely long life span, with the majority of membranes offering global standards in quality.
  • Fumes released during installation are not harmful to humans and there is low noise pollution during application either.
  • Protect insulation and have the potential to reflect harmful sun rays (some products even contain photovoltaic cells that can produce solar energy).
  • Non-water soluble, non-biodegradable, non-carcinogenic and non-toxic.

Why Hire a Roofing Contractor in Fourways This Summer?

With a hot, wet summer ahead for much of the Gauteng area, hiring a roofing contractor in Fourways is essential to ensure that you are prepared for those epic storms. While many parts of South Africa have their rain during the winter months, Gauteng is famous for its summer rains. This is great to balance out the hot temperatures, but not so great when it comes to preventing leaks, drips and other roof problems.

Now is the time to get your roof ready for summer – whether you need a simple check to see that everything is still in good condition after winter and spring, or you have specific issues that you wish to get sorted before the weather starts to heat up.

Getting Summer Ready with Fourways Roofing Contractors

There are many things that a fairly competent DIY enthusiast can tackle. Fixing and assessing roofs however is not one of them; unless you are an experienced, qualified roofing specialist. With this in mind, one of the simplest and most effective ways to get the job done properly (without the risk of even more problems further down the line) is to bring in someone who has been trained to take on specialist tasks, such as Fourways roofing contractors with sufficient expertise in summer roof preparation, repair and maintenance.

Some of the benefits of outsourcing this job include the following:

  • Storm proofing. Even the smallest hole or broken patch on a roof can lead to very serious, very expensive damage in a storm. When the rain comes down hard, your roof needs to be fully proofed against storms to ensure that water has no chance to get in anywhere.
  • Safety first. As we mentioned just now, attempting to fix or examine your own roof is not the best idea. Accidents are caused by inexperience in many cases, and unless you have built up ample experience and expertise in getting on and off roofs, walking on roofs and checking roofs safely and properly, it is far safer to call in a specialist
  • Long-term investment. Seasonal or bi-annual roof checks are a great way to ensure that your property remains in good condition throughout the year. Your property is, after all, an investment. As such, you need to look after it to get long-term rewards. This way, small problems can be spotted and fixed right away, instead of being overlooked and turned into bigger, more expensive disasters.

As you get ready for the upcoming summer months, holiday season and year-end festivities, make sure that your roof is also ready for the hot, rainy months ahead.

With the help of qualified, trusted roofing contractors in Fourways, such as Wilcote, you’ll have one less thing to worry about while you wind down to the end of year.

Roof Repair in Johannesburg North

We have recently received a number of calls with enquiries about doing small jobs in Johannesburh North, whether we need to be on site for 1 month OR 1 day, no job is too big OR too small. Here is an example of some smaller jobs we’ve recently done.

 Leaking Chimney

roof-repair-johb-north-beforeWe were called out to have a look at this leaking roof & discovered that there was a major problem around the chimney. Upon inspection Mark decided it would be best to install an apron flashing to prevent any further problems.

What is a Flashing?

Flashing refers to thin pieces of impervious material installed to prevent the passage of water into a structure from a joint or as part of a weather resistant barrier system.

Before the availability of sheet products for flashing carpenters used creative methods to minimize water penetration such as angling roof shingles away from the joint, placing chimneys at the ridge, and building steps into the sides of chimneys to throw off water. The introduction of manufactured flashing decreased water penetration at obstacles such as chimneys, vent pipes, walls which abut roofs, window and door openings, etc. thus making buildings more durable and reducing indoor mould & damp problems.

Flashing may be exposed or concealed. Exposed flashing is usually of a sheet metal and concealed flashing may be metal or a flexible, adhesive backed, material particularly around wall penetrations such as window and door openings.
